Preserve Your Smile With Orthodontic Retainers

Finishing your orthodontic treatment is a significant achievement. Your teeth are now straight, and your smile looks fantastic. However, your journey doesn't end here. To maintain those results, wearing a retainer is essential. They are used after orthodontic treatment to keep your teeth in place and prevent them from moving out of alignment. They ensure your teeth remain properly aligned while your gums, bone, and soft tissues adjust to their new position.

Types of Retainers

Retainers are designed specifically for your mouth and may be either removable or fixed in place.

1. Traditional Removable Retainers

These are made up of an acrylic base that sits against the roof of your mouth, with a slender metal wire wrapping around the front teeth. The wire can be adjusted slightly to guide your teeth if minor movement is still needed.

2. Clear Retainers (Essix Style)

These retainers resemble clear aligners and offer a discreet alternative to metal wire options. They're molded from your newly aligned teeth and may cover either your full arch or just the front teeth (canine to canine). They're often called "clip-on" retainers.

3. Fixed Retainers

A fixed retainer involves a thin wire bonded to the back of your upper or lower front teeth. It's typically recommended for at least a year after wisdom teeth removal, but in many cases, it stays in place long term—sometimes even for life.

Pros And Cons Of Each Retainer Type

Removable Retainers:

  • Easy to take out for meals and cleaning.
  • More convenient for brushing and flossing.
  • However, they're also easy to misplace—always store them in their case when not in use.

Fixed Retainers:

  • Perfect for those who prefer not to worry about wearing and removing a device.
  • No need to track wear time.
  • But they require careful hygiene, especially while flossing around the wire.
  • Floss threaders are often needed to clean effectively between teeth and around the retainer.
